About the Pot Pie Salmonella Outbreak
A Salmonella outbreak associated with pot pies from ConAgra Foods has increased to 272 cases in 35 states, reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Oct. 29, 2007. The latest update, provided by the CDC was that 65 people have been hospitalized in the outbreak. With the first notice of the outbreak reported Oct. 9, 2007, the CDC has linked Salmonellosis cases with eating Banquet brand pot pies. ConAgra issued a health alert on Oct. 9, 2007 but the company did not recall the pies until Oct 11, 2007. ConAgra’s delay in recalling the pot pies linked to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak increased the chance that more people would become sick. This is the second time in less than a year that a ConAgra Foods product has been tied to widespread Salmonella poisoning. In February 2007, ConAgra recalled Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter after they were blamed for a Salmonella epidemic that sickened 628 people in 47 states. It was determined that unsanitary conditions at ConAgra’s Sylvester, Georgia plant had allowed Salmonella bacteria to contaminate the peanut butter produced there. Peter Pan Peanut Butter was taken off the market following the recall. But ConAgra re-launched the brand in August 2007, just weeks before the Banquet Pot Pie Salmonella outbreak made news.
The current recall includes Banquet pot pies sold under the following labels:
- Albertson’s
- Food Lion
- Great Value
- Hill Country Fare
- Kirkwood
- Kroger
- Meijer
- Western Family
The 7-ounce pies bear the establishment number “P-9” or “Est. 1059” on the side of the package. Of the states affected by the outbreak, Washington has had the most cases with 27. Wisconsin is followed with 24 cases, while California, Missouri and Pennsylvania each had 18. The CDC reports that individuals who have become sick from the recalled ConAgra pot pies range in age from less than a year old to 89 years of age. An epidemiologist of the USDA advised that the large number of illnesses is an indication of inadequate cooking instructions on the Banquet pot pie packages. While cooking will usually kill Salmonella bacteria, the pathogen can survive in microwaves because they do not always cook foods evenly. Other epidemiological evidence suggests that “the issue” in this outbreak “is likely related” to unsanitary conditions in a ConAgra plant allowing contamination of Banquet pot pies and other ConAgra pot pies with Salmonella.
